Imaginative interpretations of fluid dynamics in living plant systems have, in recent years, given credibility to neo-Gothic pruning styles for grapevines.

Every substance used within an agricultural ecosystem must be evaluated for its usefulness and for its ability to be metabolized by that ecosystem. Ten years of research have irrefutably shown that the biodynamic agro-ecosystem metabolizes copper without any form of accumulation in the soil.

Can the concept of a “placebo effect” be applied to fertilizing grapevines? Or does it instead refer to the psychological effect on those willing to spend money, convinced that the vitality and fertility of plants and soil can be purchased?

Terroir is an empty word unless it represents the effective, complete, and dynamic connection between the plant and the soil — a connection that finds its fullest expression in the fruit. Biodynamic wine, wine made from grapes alone, is the highest expression of this relationship..
