If we consider the regulation on Organic Production (REGULATION (EC) No 834/2007 of June 28, 2007), it is clear to the consumer, at least, that this is a production method that does not use synthetic chemicals.
In the case of organic wine, however, the consumer is misled because the new regulation on this production method, recently approved at the EU level, is almost identical to that for conventional wines, allowing the use of the same additives.
Essentially, the organic winemaking regulation has aligned itself with the winemaking techniques already applied in the production of conventional wines currently on the market.
With this new regulation, it will be difficult in the future, for those who make wine ONLY WITH GRAPES, to distinguish themselves—under the same certification—from those who also use other additives besides grapes.
Grapes grown biodynamically achieve unsurpassed quality and health standards. In the cellar, the grapes can be vinified using only modest amounts of potassium metabisulfite.
The entire arsenal of substances and procedures listed in the annexes of the organic wine regulation is unjustifiable.
